NSS-CDS Single Tank Cavern Diver is a safety and awareness course for open-water sport divers who want to understand cavern environments while using standard single-tank recreational equipment. The official NSS-CDS page says it is not a prerequisite for, and does not count toward, any level of cave diver training or certification. The course is designed to help divers avoid common mistakes, improve buoyancy, trim, balance, propulsion, team diving, and overhead-awareness skills while remaining within cavern limits.

This course is appropriate for certified Open Water Divers who want a conservative introduction to caverns without moving into technical cave training. NSS-CDS lists a minimum age of 18, Open Water Diver or equivalent certification, and no minimum dive count. Nitrox is not required, although NSS-CDS Nitrox may be taken concurrently. Students use single-tank sport diving gear and should arrive ready to refine core skills, communication, lighting, and guideline awareness.

Training generally takes two days, with at least four dives and 90 minutes of cavern bottom time.
