Location

Little River Springs is a Suwanee county park located six miles north of Branford, along 129.

Little River Cave System

The short run to the river provides limited access for swimming, snorkeling, and openwater diving. The spring basin has a maximum depth of 25'. The Little River park is a very popular location for local high school students. It can be quite crowded and boisterous at times. Be sure to secure valuables and keep an eye on your equipment when you are out of the water.

Cavern Zone

The entrance to Little River lies in the head pool, less than a hundred yards from the Suwannee River. During normal water levels the cavern begins in about 15 feet of water, quickly sloping to 65 feet. As you turn left out of the cavern zone you'll notice significantly increased flow due to the narrowing of the cave passage. The bottom of the cave at this point is composed of hard limestone base overlain with heavy sands and pebbles. Traveling 75 feet further, the permanent line is tied off on a projection located midway up the left wall.

The Main Passage and Mud Tunnel

Once you are on the permanent line, the cave continues left and drops away steeply through a chimney formation to a depth of approximately 100 feet. The passage narrows, allowing only single file travel in this area. However, the floor to ceiling heights run 10 to 15 feet. The first significant jump is about 250 feet in on the left. Back to back line arrows mark the "mud tunnel" jump. This jump can cut your travel time along the main line by between 3 and 5 minutes owing to the reduced flow. Be advised that the "mud tunnel" can get rather silty and it has a much lower floor to ceiling clearance. This jump leads divers back to the main line (jump required) and back into the heavy flow.

Serpentine/Merry-Go-Round

After crossing back onto the mainline from the "mud tunnel", you will travel 200 to 250 feet to a large white triangle where the line T’s. Going left will lead to the Serpentine passage (a narrow and winding route), while taking a right will lead to the Merry Go Round. Both of these routes meet up again at a "T" right before the Florida Room.

Florida Room

The Florida Room opens up with floor-to-ceiling heights in excess of 20 to 30 feet. Distinguishing features of the Florida Room include a giant boulder in the floor as well as a large fissure in the ceiling. Penetration here is about 1050 feet.
