GUE Navigation Primer is a focused course for divers who want better awareness of where they are, where the team is going, and how to return with control. The official GUE page describes it as training in the basics of underwater compass use and natural navigation techniques. Those skills matter on simple recreational dives, in reduced visibility, at night, and before more complex project or rescue work where losing orientation can quickly become a team problem.

The primer is intended for autonomous divers who already have a GUE foundation. GUE lists prerequisites that include being at least 16, fit for diving, able to swim, non-smoking, and having passed GUE Open Water Diver, GUE Performance Diver, or GUE Fundamentals. Applicants also need at least 15 non-training dives after one of those certifications, with drysuit experience requirements if the class is conducted in a drysuit.

Training outcomes include simple and complex compass navigation, natural navigation, basic navigation strategies, and managing a spool as an underwater guideline. GUE also notes that the course helps prepare divers for reduced-light conditions and is recommended before courses such as Rescue Primer, Documentation Diver, and Scientific Diver.
