Use DPVs in Cave Exploration

GUE DPV Cave is an advanced cave course for divers who want to use scooters as serious exploration tools in overhead environments. GUE explains that DPVs can increase penetration distance and help carry additional equipment into a cave, but a DPV failure in an overhead setting introduces significant risk. The course therefore emphasizes gas management, contingency planning, navigation, awareness, and mastery of scooter-specific procedures rather than simply riding farther into a system.

The course is available to experienced GUE Cave 2 divers with prior DPV experience. GUE lists prerequisites including minimum age 18, fitness to dive, swimming ability, non-smoking status, medical clearance when needed, completion of GUE DPV 1 and GUE Cave 2, at least 50 Cave 2 dives beyond certification, at least 25 DPV 1 dives beyond certification, and ownership of a GUE-sanctioned DPV with sufficient burn time for the cave environment. Drysuit experience requirements apply when relevant.

Training outcomes include reinforced DPV 1 skills, management of multiple DPVs and their implications, stage-cylinder handling, cave-environment applications, and scooter-specific planning in an overhead context. GUE describes the course as normally five days, with at least five dives and 40 hours of classroom, land-drill, and in-water instruction. In High Springs, Florida, DPV Cave is a specialized class for cave divers prepared to manage range, equipment, and contingency planning at a high level.
