TDI Cavern Discovery

Course Overview

TDI Cavern Discovery is a guided introduction to cavern diving for recreational divers who want to experience the overhead environment under direct instructor supervision. The official TDI standards describe it as developing the minimum knowledge and skills for guided cavern diving within the limits of natural light, while also outlining hazards associated with cave diving. It is an experience-style course, not a full cave or independent cavern certification.

This program is best for Open Water certified divers who are curious about caverns but not ready to enroll in the full Cavern Diver course. TDI standards list SDI Open Water Scuba Diver or equivalent as the student prerequisite and allow graduates to cavern dive only under direct supervision of an active TDI Cavern instructor. It also provides a pathway into the TDI Cavern Diver course.

Training and the guided dive stay inside strict cavern limits: daylight zone, limited penetration, appropriate gas rules, maximum depth limits, and close instructor ratios.
