Cave First Responder Training

NSS-CDS First Responder is a non-diving course for cave divers who may be among the first people present after a serious cave-diving incident. The official NSS-CDS page explains that trained First Responders can help secure and manage the scene, interface with law enforcement, begin data collection, and prevent untrained individuals from making the situation worse. It was developed in cooperation with the International Underwater Cave Rescue and Recovery group.

This course is for full Cave Divers who understand that emergency response around a cave site involves responsibility, restraint, and clear communication. NSS-CDS lists a minimum age of 18 and full Cave Diver certification or equivalent from a widely recognized training organization. Students should not expect body-recovery training or rescue-hero scenarios; the practical value is knowing how to help preserve safety, information, and order until the proper authorities or recovery teams take over.

Training generally takes the better part of a day and has no diving equipment requirements. In High Springs, Florida, First Responder is especially relevant because active cave-diving sites can quickly involve witnesses, friends, law enforcement, land managers, and recovery personnel. The expected outcome is a diver who can support an incident response calmly, protect the scene, collect useful information, and understand the limits of their role.
