DPV Cave Diver Training

NSS-CDS DPV Cave Diver trains experienced cave divers to use diver propulsion vehicles without letting range, speed, and excitement undermine safety. The official NSS-CDS page explains that DPVs can substantially increase the risks associated with cave diving, including failed scooters far from the exit, difficult towing while sharing gas, losing the guideline quickly, striking the cave, and damaging fragile environments. The course teaches the planning and practical skills needed to manage those risks.

This course is for full Cave Divers with real post-certification cave experience. NSS-CDS lists a minimum age of 18, full Cave Diver or equivalent certification, at least 50 non-training cave dives after initial Cave Diver certification, and notes that Stage Cave Diver certification or equivalent experience is essentially required. Students should already have excellent cave navigation, gas planning, team awareness, trim, and emergency discipline before adding a scooter.

Training generally takes three days and includes three or more dives using a suitably outfitted DPV and tow strap or harness.
