Enter the Cavern Zone Safely
IANTD Cavern Diver is the first overhead-environment step for divers who want to understand cavern procedures without moving into full cave penetration. The official IANTD Cavern Diver or Limited Mine page describes training within the limits of light penetration and emphasizes self-responsibility and risk management in overhead environments. That makes the course an important boundary-setting class: it teaches respect for overhead diving before a diver goes farther.
The program is intended for divers who already have open-water experience and are ready to learn overhead-specific awareness. IANTD lists prerequisites including Advanced Open Water Diver or equivalent, minimum age 15 for full diver qualification with parent or guardian authorization when required, and proof of at least 10 logged dives. Junior cavern provisions are listed for qualified students between 12 and 14 under appropriate adult supervision.
