Access Restrictive Cave Passages

GUE Sidemount Cave gives experienced cave divers a structured way to learn sidemount equipment configuration for passages that are too small or restrictive for standard GUE backmount doubles. The official GUE page explains that sidemount can let divers experience, enjoy, and explore areas that are not practical with back-mounted cylinders. The course develops the specific skills and knowledge needed to plan and execute dives in tight cave passage while understanding the configuration?s advantages and limitations.

This is advanced cave training for divers with a strong overhead foundation. GUE expects candidates to have high fundamental skills, strong cave diving ability, comfort in overhead environments, and reasonable cave diving experience. Official prerequisites include minimum age 18, fitness to dive, swimming ability, non-smoking status, medical clearance when needed, Cave Diver 2 certification, at least 50 logged dives beyond Cave 2 certification, and at least 200 dives beyond autonomous entry-level certification. DPV Cave is required if DPVs are used during the class.

Training outcomes focus on safely navigating confined cave passageways and understanding the strengths and drawbacks of sidemount equipment. GUE describes the course as normally five days, with 10 dives, at least four of which must include restrictive passages, and at least 40 hours of classroom, land-drill, and in-water work. At Extreme Exposure in High Springs, Florida, Sidemount Cave is for committed cave divers who need a tool for specific cave objectives, not a shortcut into overhead diving.
