Use CCR Technology in Caves

GUE CCR Cave is advanced overhead training for divers who are already competent in both cave diving and closed-circuit rebreather use. GUE explains that deeper cave exploration and longer passages may create a need for additional time and redundancy, making CCR advantages attractive to experienced cave divers. The course prepares already experienced divers to use closed-circuit rebreather technology safely in cave environments rather than treating the CCR as a shortcut into overhead diving.

This course is designed for experienced GUE cave and CCR divers. GUE lists prerequisites including minimum age 18, fitness to dive, swimming ability, non-smoking status, medical clearance when needed, completion of GUE Closed-Circuit Rebreather Technical Diver Level 1 and GUE Cave Diver Level 2, at least 25 dives beyond Cave 2 certification, at least 50 dives beyond CCR Technical Diver 1 certification, and ownership of a GUE-approved closed-circuit rebreather. Drysuit experience requirements apply when relevant.

Training outcomes focus on mastery-level CCR skills, knowledge, and procedures appropriate for cave environments, where navigation, team positioning, bailout planning, failure management, and gas logistics all become more consequential. GUE describes CCR Cave as normally four days, with at least five dives, 32 hours of instruction, and at least 10 hours of in-water work. In High Springs, Florida, it is a specialized course for highly experienced divers preparing for demanding cave projects and explorations.
