GUE Advanced Open Water Diver is the next major step after a solid entry-level foundation. GUE identifies it as Recreational Diver Level 2, designed to prepare divers for deeper recreational diving and more self-reliant team diving. The course brings together navigation, rescue, and deep-diving development, so the focus is broader than simply adding depth. Students work on finding their way underwater, managing low-visibility or night conditions, responding to a distressed teammate, and planning dives to 100 feet or 30 meters.

The course is intended for divers who have already passed GUE Open Water Diver, GUE Performance Diver, or GUE Fundamentals and have logged at least 15 non-training dives. GUE also requires applicants to be at least 16, fit for diving, able to swim, and current with recognized basic life support training. If doubles or drysuit use is part of the class, the official prerequisites add experience requirements for those configurations, so readiness should be confirmed before scheduling.

GUE describes the course as usually taking six days, with classroom learning, land drills, and in-water work across 11 dives. At Extreme Exposure in High Springs, Florida, it is a strong progression for divers who want better control, better planning, and more confidence before moving toward Master Diver, technical fundamentals, cave training, or more demanding recreational dives.
